How to Wash Down and Feather Products

  • Use a mild detergent (like Woolite)
  • Wash by hand or in a washing machine on a gentle cycle.
  • Submerse in water until completely soaked
  • Squeeze the air out of the article to get it wet thoroughly
  • Rinse well and hang in shaded area to dry
  • Tumble dry on a low heat if necessary
  • Ensure your duvet or pillow is completely dry before using it
  • If properly cared for down duvets and down pillows will last you a lifetime.
  • Don't wash the duvet unless it is necessary. Hanging it out in the sun for an hour once every two weeks would help to get rid of moisture in the duvet, it would kill dustmite and it would help to keep the it fluffed.
  • If you want to just clean a smallish spill, putt the duvet on a table and with the side of your hand move the down filling to the side of the duvet block. Then handwash that section only with Woolite and cold water. If you need to wash the entire duvet it is best to do it by hand in your tub. Realistically however, most people don't have the time for that these days.
  • If you use a top loader washing machine, put the duvet in, fill the machine with cold water and 2 caps of Woolite (nothing else will do, its available at Pick & Pay).
  • Submerse and squeeze the air out of the duvet, otherwise it will float on top. Once it is wet, wash, rinse and spin on a gentle cycle.
  • After washing, give the duvet a good shake to get rid of most fabric creases. All the wet down will lump together at the bottom of each pocket. Don't Panic
  • Hang the duvet on your washing line. Turn the duvet every 2 hours and give it a shake. As it gets dry loosen and even out the lumpy pieces of down with your fingers.
  • Your duvet should dry within 8 hours.
  • If your tumble dryer is big enough you could also tumble at a Low Heat for 20 minutes since heat helps down fluff, but this step is not really necessary.
